Introduction of the Instructor

Walter Gander is Professor Emeritus of Scientific Computing in the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich. He joined the department in 1987 as Associate Professor and was promoted to Full Professor in 1991. He was involved in the early development of the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich. In January 1989, he founded the Institute for Scientific Computing at ETH and served as its head until September 1997. From October 1990 to October 1992, he was Head of Education of the Department, and from October 1997 to October 2001, he served as Chairman of the Department and as Head of Education. From May 1989 to May 1991, he chaired the evaluation committee for the Swiss national supercomputer project, which led to the procurement of the NEC SX-3 supercomputer and the establishment of the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Manno. His research areas include scientific computing, numerical linear algebra, and parallel computing. He has published more than 70 scientific papers and authored seven books. In 2002, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, and in 2007, he became a member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences.
